What makes a great Leader?

The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one who gets the people to do the greatest things! – Ronald Reagan

Leadership doesn’t necessarily have to be about leading a team. It can be about leading your in life. Every great achievement starts with a push from within. And we have all used that leadership skill in us at some point in life to move forward, take initiatives and achieve success.

I won’t talk much about the practical skills that a leader should possess. You can always google that. Through this blog post, I’d rather love to share some tips that I’ve learnt through real life experiences. Today, I’m going to give you 7 tips about how you can actually lead a team to success. Let’s begin:

The first step towards success is discipline

A leader should ensure that the team follows discipline. You can do this by setting an example yourself. For example, suppose you want to have a team meeting let’s say at 9am in the morning. As a leader, you must reach the venue at least 5 minutes earlier. This will set the tone for your club. It’ll push your teammates to be punctual as well and ensure that the discipline is maintained. It seems like a small thing but is very effective in leading a team to success.

The second tip is to ‘Act as if’

By acting as if means we must train our team to act and feel like a winning team from day 1. Talk to them about how a winning team works, how they eat, sleep and function. Inculcate a winning mindset, a winner’s attitude and you won’t be far from achieving success for your team.

The third step is to pay special attention to individual goals and trying to align them with group goals.

A great team is formed by super enthusiastic and motivated individuals. As a leader, we’ve got to pay special attention to individual needs and see if the members are able to achieve them. Unless and until they see growth in themselves, they won’t be motivated enough to work for the team.

The fourth step is to ‘Delegate Responsibilities’

Instead of taking all the responsibilities on our head, we must make it a habit to delegate them to other members. This will make them feel more connected and responsible towards the club. It will also ensure that work is completed on time and with efficiency.

The fifth and one of the most important tip is to inculcate a sense of oneness and unity.

A team comprises of people from diverse backgrounds and varied perceptions. Our role as a leader would be to unite them into one team. One way to do this is to organize events or bonding sessions where they’d get to spend some quality time, interact and bond with each other. This is very important to keep up the energy and create a sense of belongingness.

The sixth step is ‘to stay one step ahead from the competitors’.

Never underestimate your competitors even if they’re not strong contenders. The best way is to overestimate them. This will push the team to keep working harder and stay motivated. It is important to know who your competitors are and also about their strengths and weaknesses.

The seventh tip is ‘Be approachable but maintain distance’.

Along with being a friend and a mentor, at times you will also have to take tough decisions and exercise control. So, you’ve got to be approachable and empathetic while at the same time maintaining professionalism. A leader should ensure not to be overfriendly with his teammates.

The last and the most effective tip is – Commendation, feedback and motivation.

As a leader, we should place special emphasis to your teammates’ growth. While working on members’ growth, always appreciate and acknowledge their achievements and efforts. Give them proper feedback for improvement. Once in a while deliver impactful and motivational speeches to keep their energy and spirits high.

These 8 tips have helped me personally to be an effective leader and I hope that they help you too. If you have some other tips to share, please feel free to leave your comments below for our readers.

Conclusion

Every leadership style is different. But what matters most is whether you’re able to keep the team united, motivated and inspired. When you’re a leader, you’re someone that the team will look up to. Your attitude is going to set the tone for the team. With a winner’s mindset and a pragmatic approach, I’m sure you’d make an excellent leader and inspire your team to achieve great heights
